Give Police Officers Basic Requisite Training Before Arming Them - Security Experts Advise
The decision to equip
operatives of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) on our roads with guns
and other weapons has been described as a good decision at a wrong time.
However, a call has been made to give police officers requisite modern training to equip their ability and knowledge before thinking of anything else.
Executive Director of Bureau of Public Safety, Nana Yaw Akwada, in an interview with Abena Opokua Ahwenee on Dadi FM morning show "Efa Woho" indicated, even though the police service needs retooling and equipment, he still believes it basic soft training should be done first.
Meanwhile, former Chief of Staff and Minister of Interior, Prosper Bani on the same show, added his voice to the call for training on police officers in basic soft skills as it forms the main part of ensuring maximum protection for both the officer and civilians.
According to him, there is nothing wrong in revamping and retooling the Police force as it forms part of enhancing security in the 21st century as things are getting more sophisticated.
Mr Bani, however, charged the media to seek the outcome of cases where police officers are seen to have wrongfully shot and killed civilians so as to feed the public on the outcome of such cases.
He also challenged the Police hierarchy to make such information available to the public so as to help boost public confidence in the service.
